ANKOKU BUTOH WORKSHOP:
Liberation of the Body – The Poetry of the Night Mind
A journey into the roots of Butoh, the Japanese avant-garde dance that emerged from the shadows of post-war culture.
Ankoku stands for Darkness and its dance, Butoh, is a translusive dance between two worlds - the Day World, the revealed - and the Night World, the hidden, dream-like world.
Butoh is not concerned with aesthetics or technique. It is a search for a body that is free from cultural references—a body open to transformation, to becoming, to the unknown.
It invites a shift in how we experience movement: Not the body as a functional object shaped by society, but the body as a living, changing sculpture, shaped by life itself.
THE METHOD – Subbody
There are many forms of Butoh. This workshop follows the Subbody method—a unification of the subconscious and the body.
When we quiet daily thinking and suspend judgment through various conditioning methods, we begin to sense the subtle life within. We move from thinking to listening, from listening to resonance. We resonate with the subconscious, allowing movement to emerge from within.
The subconscious is the seat of our feelings and emotions - we let it dance.
