by special arrangement with Gabriel Bologna
From the legendary Renée Taylor—Emmy winner, Academy Award nominee and one of comedy’s most beloved voices—comes the World Premiere of Dying is No Excuse, a hilarious and heartfelt new play shaped with Elaine May and with thoughtful staging by Greg Santos.
Originally envisioned with Taylor at the center of the storytelling, supported by a cast portraying key figures from her life, the production has evolved during its journey to the stage. In this reimagined World Premiere, Taylor introduces the play and remains an integral on-stage presence, while actress Nicholle Tom—who appeared alongside Taylor on The Nanny—joins her in bringing the story to life. Together, they create a moving theatrical duet, illuminating Renée’s memories with warmth, humor and heart.
At its heart, Dying is No Excuse is a love story—the story of Renée’s extraordinary partnership with her late husband, the brilliant actor and writer Joe Bologna. Through laughter and tears, the play follows their whirlwind romance, surprise TV wedding, shared creative life and the joy and heartbreak of a relationship built on devotion and humor. From the early days of hustling in Hollywood to the success of Lovers and Other Strangers, from Bologna’s unexpected rise as a leading man to the final chapter of their life together, Dying is No Excuse is a tribute to love that endures and a life fully lived.
Greg Santos’ staging brings warmth and theatricality to the production, while Elaine May’s creative insight—sharp, honest and full of heart—has helped shape the production’s unique tone and rhythm.
Poignant, funny and deeply personal, Dying is No Excuse celebrates a legendary love story through the eyes of a woman who lived every moment of it. Don’t miss this unforgettable evening of theater with Renée Taylor and Nicholle Tom, sharing a story as big, bold and beautiful as life itself.
