About this Event

Join the Sentry School of Business and Economics at UW-Stevens Point for a brown bag lunch and learn event about "Grit Uncovered: What Factors Create the Most Resilient Achievers?" featuring Nik Butz on Friday, May 9 from 12-2 p.m. in the College of Professional Studies (Room 329). Boxed lunch and beverage will be included.

About the Presentation

Grit—the perseverance and passion for long-term goals—is widely recognized as a key determinant of success, influencing academic performance, career growth, and beyond. But what experiences and behaviors shape its development? Despite its significance, little is known about which underlying factors are most prevalent among the grittiest of college students. This session examines potential influences on grit, including balancing work and academics, future planning habits, willingness to take risks, entrepreneurial aspirations, and involvement in university athletics and student organizations. Understanding these foundations offers valuable insights for university programming and personal development strategies—ultimately equipping students with the mindset needed for long-term success.

About the Speaker

Nikolaus T. Butz is an associate professor of business and the Sentry Insurance Endowed Chair in Business Analytics for the Sentry School of Business and Economics at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration as well as an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of North Dakota. His research has two main trajectories: case research that explores the real challenges companies face and how they adapt—or fail to adapt, and empirical research that focuses on the predictors of business performance.
