Susan Peterson Gateley on Wildlife Artist Ernest T. Seton

Ernest T Seton, (1860 -1984) one of the most successful wildlife artists in US history, was also a giant in the human history of conservation. He grew up on a farm in Canada near Lake Ontario but left home to travel west to Manitoba at an early age. Here he learned of Nature and of the Indigenous native culture that he admired and supported for his entire life. Besides art and literature he was an activist for conservation. He co-founded the predecessor organization for the Boy Scouts of America and worked to pass pioneering federal legislation to preserve migratory birds. His artwork and prolific writing on behalf of predators as essential to healthy game animal population were among the first such efforts aimed at a general audience and helped change attitudes towards predators.
