Bluebelts are natural drainage systems of ponds, streams, and wetlands that have been enhanced to store and filter runoff from rain. They are feats of stormwater engineering that reduce flooding, create critical habitats for flora and fauna, and provide new green spaces for local residents to enjoy. Completed in 2023, New Creek Bluebelt is one of the newest additions to Staten Island’s Bluebelts program, which has been in operation since the 1990s and covers about 10,000 acres across the borough.
Walk the New Creek Bluebelt with NYC Department of Environmental Protection’s Rob Brauman, Deputy Chief of Daily Operations for the Bluebelt Program and learn how Bluebelts are a powerful solution for stormwater management.
This program is part of Water Works, a new yearlong series exploring the city’s water systems and our connections to water. The series is produced with lead agency partner NYC Department of Environmental Protection and with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
