Have we given ourselves permission to destroy and reimagine the institutions that fuel our everyday violence? MATILDA follows Matilda Wormwood, an inquisitive and capable five-year-old girl who loves reading, has telekinesis powers, and dismantes the institutions around her—her family and school. MATILDA hopes to frame this story through the power of institutional abolition in familial and educational contexts, the reimagination of lives and communities that are not reliant on violence and power abuse, and community building and its capacities for change—all in context of Asian America and its allied communities. MATILDA is a musical that addresses the violence, abuse, and harm in the family and education system and creates a world in which it is possible to abolish these institutions to reimagine more healthy lives for the characters.
