The term languishing was coined by sociologist Corey Keyes to describe a state that is not depression and also not flourishing. It’s often described as a feeling of “emptiness and stagnation,” marked by listlessness, apathy, and a sense of mental weariness.

If this resonates with you, you’re not alone. Languishing is a common but often overlooked condition. A 2024 survey found that at least one in four Americans report report experiencing it.
