• Dry sticks and twigs - good for ladybirds, beetles, and spiders.
• Bark pieces - provides crevices for beetles and woodlice.
• Hollow stems (bamboo, elder, teasel, sunflower stems, etc.) - perfect for solitary bees.
• Pinecones - create lots of nooks for small insects.
• Logs or chunks of untreated wood - especially with holes drilled in (different diameters, 2-10 mm).
• Dry leaves - hiding and nesting spots for beetles and earwigs.
• Straw or hay - insulation and cover.
• Moss and lichen - moisture control and extra habitat.
•Stones or broken terracotta pots - cool, damp hiding places for woodlice and centipedes.
Other useful items
• Cardboard tubes (like toilet roll middles) - extra tunnels for bees and bugs.
• Clay or soil lumps - for solitary bees that use mud to seal their tunnels.
