WEEKEND BEER FLIGHT: The Corsendonk Monastery

The history of Corsendonk is tied to the Priory of Corsendonk, a brewery founded in 1398 in Oud-Turnhout, Belgium. The priory and its brewery were closed in 1784 by Austrian Emperor Joseph II, and the brand was revived in 1982 by Antonius Keersmaekers and the Du Bocq Brewery. Today, the Corsendonk brand continues the abbey-style beer tradition, with brewing and marketing handled by Du Bocq Brewery.

Priory and historical brewing
1398: The Priory of Corsendonk was founded, and a brewery and malt-house were established on its grounds.
1659: A plate by Lucas Vosterman documented the priory's brewery, windmills, and other facilities.
1784: The priory was dissolved and the brewery closed by order of Emperor Joseph II.

Revival and modern era
1906: Antonius Keersmaekers continued the local brewing tradition in Oud-Turnhout.
1982: The Corsendonk brand was revived by Jef Keersmaekers and the local tourist office, with the beers being brewed by Du Bocq Brewery.
Present: The Du Bocq Brewery continues to produce the Corsendonk beers, which are marketed internationally as abbey-style beers.
