Music & the Brain: Psychology, Physiology and Neuroscience

Music, a major mode of communication in all human cultures and throughout the span of life, appears to be a uniquely human feature. It shares with language special pitch trajectories, timing between sounds as well as syntax (structure), though not semantics (specific meaning). However it is processed by the brain differently from language, having a wider impact in evoking emotions and movement, in fact evoking a whole brain experience.

Join us to learn how sound becomes music, how features of music are sensed by the cochlea of the inner ear, perceived by the brainstem and auditory cortex, and sent to the brain to be transformed into the whole body responses we’ve learned to seek out and appreciate.
