Gardens and Plants of Colonial America

The American colonists planted kitchen gardens out of necessity, as their very survival depended upon the food that their simple gardens could provide. Later farms and large plantations were established, and crops were exported. Flower gardens arose after necessities were met. Several elaborate gardens from the colonial period still exist today or have been recreated. This presentation includes the period from 1600 to 1775 and explores what plants the colonists planted as well as the grand gardens of that period.
