ABOUT ATLANTIC JAZZ NIGHTS

Newfoundland and Labrador’s premier jazz concert series invites you for a sneak peek at its fourth season coming to the Arts & Culture Centres this fall.
Now in its fourth season, Atlantic Jazz Nights continues to present the world-class jazz performers from across the globe to the growing audience
for jazz music in the province. Learn more about the performers for the ACC Fall Showcase.

Florian Hoefner—Piano

Atlantic Jazz Nights co-host and performer Florian Hoefner is a Juno Award-winning jazz pianist and composer whose journey spans continents. Born and raised in Germany, trained in New York City, and now based in Newfoundland and Labrador, Hoefner draws from a rich tapestry of global influences to shape his distinctive voice in modern jazz. Praised by The New York Times as a “composer-bandleader of insightful resolve” and hailed by Downbeat Magazine as a “harmonically daring pianist… reaching toward new sonic territory,” he continues to make his mark as an inventive force in contemporary jazz—both as a creator and performer.

Jim Vivian—Bass

Juno Award-winning bassist Jim Vivian has been a leading figure in Canadian music for over three decades. Based in Newfoundland and Labrador, he has contributed to more than 130 recordings, 30 of which have earned Juno nominations—showcasing his versatility and artistry across genres. Jim has performed and recorded with a distinguished roster of internationally acclaimed artists, including John Abercrombie, Jerry Bergonzi, Mick Goodrick, David Liebman, John Taylor, Kenny Wheeler, and Norma Winstone. Beyond his prolific performance career, Jim is a passionate educator. He served on the jazz faculty at the University of Toronto in the early 2000s and later returned to Newfoundland, where he now co-hosts and curates the Atlantic Jazz Nights concert series, fostering the next generation of the province’s vibrant jazz community.

Jacob Slous—Drums

Jacob Slous is a professional drummer, composer, and educator based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Through his young career, Jacob is fortunate to have already played alongside members of the Grammy award-winning BADBADNOTGOOD, and JUNO award-winning musicians such as Florian Hoefner and Elizabeth Shepherd. Jacob is also honoured to have performed with musicians such as trumpeter Tim Hagans, and former leader of “The Tonight Show Band” - Doc Severinsen. Jacob has also recorded drums for international artists in various genres, and his playing is featured on a number of albums.

Kevin Turcotte—Trumpet

In the past 30 years, trumpeter Kevin Turcotte has toured and recorded with artists like Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass, opera singer Measha Bruegergossman, folk singer songwriter Bruce Cockburn and many groups led by Oscar Peterson Trio alumnus and bassist Dave Young. He was honoured to play all of the trumpet tracks in the film starring Ethan Hawke about the life of Chet Baker called Born To Be Blue, was featured on the award winning soundtrack for the video game Cuphead and recently won a latin Grammy and Juno Award with the Hilario Duran Latin Jazz Big Band featuring Paquito D’Rivera. Kevin freelances in the jazz clubs, concert halls and theatres around Toronto and teaches trumpet and ensembles at York University and the University of Toronto.

ABOUT WEKU

Weku (pronounced Weh-kuh) means “family” in Ga, the language spoken by the people of Ghana’s coastal Greater Accra Region. Formed by Grant King (guitar), George Gogoe (bass), and Ashley Chalmers (drums), the trio brings together three distinct musical voices into one unified sound that embodies culture, expression, and groove. The desire to bring jazz fusion layered with rhythms of funk, afrobeat, and the melodic richness of high life is what prompted the creation of Weku. What started as a collection of experimental ideas became a gateway to birth their signature style of music. The band’s name is a reflection of who they are. Weku’s sound thrives on connection, improvisation, and collective groove, just as family is built on trust and communication.
