Can you tell a Beech from a Birch, just by its leaves?
What about in winter, when the leaves have fallen?
Do you know which trees are edible, medicinal, or can live for over 400 years?
Join local botanist Josh Quick of Wild St Ives for a guided tree identification walk amongst the ancient trees of the Steeple woodland and learn to connect to nature in a whole new way.
Trees have always been an important part of human culture, providing beauty, food, fuel, medicines and shelter.
Learning to identify a range of common tree species can enhance any walk in the countryside.
We'll spend the day in the beautiful Steeple woodland; a temperate rainforest overlooking St Ives, full of a diverse range of ancient trees each with their own story to tell.
Josh grew up playing amongst these trees and this is a woodland very close to his heart.
On this guided walk we will explore:
-How to identify a range of trees
-Their historical & modern uses
-The basics of woodland ecology
Perfect for complete beginners or those with some experience in tree identification.
With a few key pointers and observation, it becomes easy to identify a range of species. The aim of the day is to get people confidently identifying a variety of trees you are likely to encounter in British woodlands.
This walk will last approximately 2 hours.
