We will visit Primrose Hill, the ancestral home of the Sternbeck family - which was lovingly restored by its present owners and members of the Society, Sue and Peter Inman, who have generously opened it to us on Saturday 30th August.

DETAILS:
The Dharug & Lower Hawkesbury Historical Society invites all to join us in a walk up Shepherd’s Gully to the heights above Devine’s Hill and back again via an older road – Sternbeck’s Gully Road.
Shepherds Gully was once a part of Main Road 181 – the principal road route out of Sydney to the north, until the building of the Pacific Highway. Now it is a delightful and deserted fire trail. (Devine’s Hill is currently closed to walkers whilst collapsing stonework is repaired).
The Gully roads wind up through moist myrtle forest, which gives way to drier sclerophyll forest towards the top. Although not as dramatic as those on Devine’s Hill, in the Gully there are beautiful moss covered stone walls dating back to the 1840s.
It is a moderate walk which should take approximately 2 hours.
Once we are back down you are invited on a tour of historic Primrose Hill, which lies at the bottom of the Gully Road.
WHERE:
We will meet at 10.00am in the park in Wisemans Ferry, behind the kiosk at the ferry landing. We will have morning tea (bring your own) and the tour leader will explain the surprising history of Shepherds Gully.
Then we will proceed in convoy across the ferry to Primrose Hill farm, where we will park in the field below Shepherd’s Gully.
WHAT TO BRING:
Bring lunch. We will eat together seated on the verandah of Primrose Hill, looking out over the Macdonald Valley.
Bring anything else you might require, particularly water and perhaps something for morning tea.
You will need a hat, suitable footwear and sunscreen.
Come prepared for wet weather if it looks overcast.
COST: $10.00 for members and $20.00 for non-members.
BOOKINGS: Call Rob Cunneen on 0439 265 595.
