Come learn about the current status of herring in Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound on May 22nd at the Brackendale Art Gallery.

About this event: Pacific herring, known as slhawt’ in the Skwxwú7mesh sníchim / Squamish language, are an environmentally and culturally important fish. Over the past several years, the Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound Marine Stewardship Initiative (MSI) has partnered closely with the Squamish Nation Rights & Title Department to document herring spawn within their traditional territory, with a Two-Eyed Seeing approach. The Searching for Slhawt’ / Herring Spawn Survey Program aims to establish a long-term dataset that tracks the status and trends of herring spawn distribution, abundance, and timing in Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound.
Within this program, we enlist the help of volunteers to monitor sites by walking throughout Skwelwil’em / the Squamish Estuary, and staff from the MSI and Squamish Nation to monitor ocean sites via snorkel surveys.
During this event, the MSI and program partners will be sharing results from the 2025 Searching for Slhawt' / Herring survey program, featuring:
-Stories about herring in Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound
-Results from the 2025 Search for Slhawt’ Program
-Several short films about herring
Doors open at 6pm and the event will begin at 6:30 pm.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase from the BAG.
Tickets are by-donation ($10 suggested) or free for our 2025 volunteers and program partners. The event is open to anyone interested in herring. A donation is suggested for those attending who were not directly involved in the program this year.
