In 2009, Mark and Kira Johnson welcomed their son Colin, who was born with Down syndrome, and soon after, they became closely connected with the Edmonton Down Syndrome Society (EDSS). Inspired by their journey, Weiss-Johnson has hosted an annual charity golf event, partnering with suppliers, trades, and builders to raise nearly $220,000 for EDSS.
Proceeds from this event directly support the society’s efforts to meet the evolving needs of the Down syndrome community. As we look ahead to 2025, EDSS has identified three key funding priorities:
✅ Program Expansion: Enhancing programs at the Joey Moss Literacy Centre for Excellence to improve speech, communication, and overall mental and physical health for families.
✅ Intentional Housing: Developing strategies and partnerships to educate families about community-supported housing options, ensuring safe and inclusive living environments.
✅ Access to Medical Professionals: Addressing challenges faced by families with adult children who have Down syndrome in accessing specialized medical care.
The generosity and dedication of Weiss-Johnson and their partners continue to make a profound impact on countless families. Together, we are building a more inclusive and supportive future for the Down syndrome community.
