Who is Paula?
I am the founder and executive director of Power On With Limb Loss. My journey began after a motorcycle accident that led to the amputation of my foot. Initially, I experienced fear and anxiety about this life-changing event, but I found solace and empowerment through a peer visitor who encouraged me to continue living life to the fullest. Inspired by this experience, I made it my mission to ensure that every amputee has access to a peer visitor who can provide guidance, support, and encouragement.
Since becoming an amputee in 2011, I have embraced an active lifestyle. I have participated in numerous 5k runs, achieving a personal best by completing the Eugene Half Marathon with great excitement as I crossed the finish line at the historic Hayward Field—a remarkable achievement for a 64-year-old amputee! I have also formed teams with amputees, family, and friends for various events, including a memorable mud run called the Dirty Dash, where 25 of us came together to challenge ourselves and have fun. This experience ignited a realization within me: I am just getting started!
Today,at the age of 72, I continue to enjoy a variety of activities, including biking, walking with friends, kayaking, rock wall climbing, and even a bit of archery. I founded Power On With Limb Loss to address the significant need for local support in Lane County and the United States. Our organization aims to inspire amputees and physically challenged individuals by providing a community where they can feel understood and supported—whether it’s through our three monthly support group meetings or simply having a listening ear from someone who truly relates to their experiences.
As a double-certified peer visitor for Ampower and the Amputee Coalition, as well as a certified peer visitor trainer, I am dedicated to making a difference in the lives of others. Additionally, I have recently been invited to join the Medical Advisory Committee for Lane Community College.
Before my journey as an amputee, I spent 50 years as a cosmetologist, owning salons and managing a beauty supply store. I am also a proud mother of two. From 1999 to 2003, I managed a group home for individuals with physical, medical, and developmental challenges. This role was particularly important to me, as I have a son with autism, and it allowed me to navigate the complexities of the system. My experiences have profoundly shaped my understanding and ability to access resources, not only for myself but also for other amputees.
