About the Guest Birders
Jen Mortenson
Dr. Jen Mortenson is a conservation ecologist and professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Arkansas, where she studies how animal behavior and population dynamics influence extinction risk—focusing on wild birds in Northwest Arkansas and the Caribbean. Interestingly, Jen didn’t always love birds—she once dreamed of becoming a dentist! But growing up in a military family and moving frequently exposed her to diverse ecosystems, sparking a passion for ecology. Now, she’s a founding Board member of Ozark Bird Conservancy and blends fieldwork with statistical modeling to support bird conservation.
Kenny Younger
For Kenny Younger, birding began with a perfectly timed encounter—two Sandhill Cranes landing in his landscape shot in Madison, WI. A close-up moment with a Belted Kingfisher soon after sealed his passion, and he’s been hooked ever since.
Now based in Fayetteville, Kenny has spent the past three years deeply involved in the Washington County birding scene. He’s an active eBird Reviewer for Northwest Arkansas, a field trip guide for the Audubon Society, and a sector lead for the Fayetteville Christmas Bird Count. Most days, you’ll find him behind binoculars, a spotting scope, or his ever-present camera, always eager to share his knowledge.
