The Silent Companions is a Victorian-era gothic ghost story by Laura Purcell about Elsie, a newly widowed and pregnant woman who moves into her late husband's isolated country estate, The Bridge. There, she discovers a locked room containing a painted wooden figure—a silent companion—that looks like her, and a diary detailing the house's dark past. As the figure appears in different parts of the house and unsettling events occur, Elsie realizes the house and its sinister companions are more than just local superstitions, leading to a chilling tale of the supernatural and societal constraints.
