Karl Latham w/Mark Egan & Mitch Stein Opens Sparta Series
The Sparta Summer Concert Series opens this season July 11th with jazz drummer Karl Latham featuring world renowned bassist Mark Egan.
Karl’s career has spanned the globe performing, recording, and producing with Grammy Award winning artists, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and multitude of internationally acclaimed musicians. Karl has performed with notable artists including: John Lee with Claudio Roditi, Slide Hampton, Clark Terry, Freddie Hendrix, and Cyrus Chestunt; The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Stars; Dizzy Gillespie Afro-Latin Experience with Paquito D’Rivera; The Fantasy Band including Dave Valentine, Dave Samuels, Chuck Loeb, Noel Pointer, Roy Ayers; The Bernie Worrell Orchestra; Michael Urbaniak; Andy Snitzer; Edgar Winter; Johnny Winter; The Shirelles (Music Director); Howard Paul with guests Tom Scott and Anat Cohen; Ali Ryerson; Wolfgang Lackerschmid with Atilla Zoller, Ed Cherry, Cameron Brown; Karl has subbed on the Broadway productions of “Bring It On”, “Hamilton”, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, and “Ain’t Too Proud”. Karl is included in the Drummerworld Top Drummers list.
Karl is co-leader of Big Fun(K) with Don Braden and co lead the “2016 BMW Welt Jazz Award” nominated group “Constellations”. To date Karl has releases as a leader: “Dancing Spirits”, “Resonance” and “Living Standards” with Mark Egan and Vic Juris.
One of the premier electric bassists of contemporary jazz, Mark Egan has distinguished himself over the past five decades with his distinctive fretless bass sound that has graced countless jazz and pop albums as well as award-winning movie and television soundtracks. An in-demand New York City studio musician who has played on multi-gold and platinum-selling recordings by Sting, Arcadia, Marc Cohn,GRP Christmas, Mecano and Joan Osborne, Egan has also recorded with a wide variety of artists from pop stars like Roger Daltrey, Sophie B. Hawkins, Marianne Faithfull, Judy Collins, Cyndi Lauper and Art Garfunkel to jazz notables like David Sanborn, John McLaughlin, John Abercrombie, Randy Brecker, Gato Barbieri, Freddy Cole, Jim Hall, Joe Beck, Pat Martino, Mark Murphy and Larry Coryell. A charter member of the Pat Metheny Group (formed in 1977) and member of the Gil Evans Orchestra for 13 years, Egan has 14 albums as a leader to his credit and another 10 as a co-leader of Elements, the fusion band he formed in 1982 with his Pat Metheny Group bandmate, drummer Danny Gottlieb.
Mitch Stein joins the Karl’s trio on guitar. An acclaimed musician and composer, Mitch “Moose” Stein has played with Brother Jack McDuff, David Sanborn, The Brecker Brothers, Don Alias, Steve Gadd, Adam Holzman and others. An in demand session man, he also leads his own Mitch Stein Trio.
Karl’s group will be performing songs from his highly acclaimed new record “Living Standards II”, new interpretations of classic rock and pop hits.
The Kingston, NY based group Sparrow Lore is kicking the night off. Sparrow Lore is a jazz trio consisting of Jef Brown (guitar), Max Liebman (bass), and Aidan Samp (drums). The group plays original compositions fusing contemporary jazz techniques with ancient forms of ritual rhythms and arrangements that have room to be expanded through collective improvisation.
