Basin Stories: Time Lapse Capture For Sense of Place

We will discuss basic principles for preparing timelapse captures, including composition, lighting, and calculations for frame rate and shot intervals. Conceptually, we will focus on a sense of place as the purpose for capture, in service of ecological literacy through creative expression of time in space. We’ll explore a simple definition for sense of place: figuring out the reality of where you are, and how you perceive that reality, and what your perception of that reality means to you. We’ll explore how place identity, place attachment, and placeness can be elaborated through visual narratives using single or mixed media.

We’ll explore and practice different timelapse capture workflows, including smartphone apps and more technical combinations of DSLR cameras and software applications. We will go outside and practice varied-interval timelapse captures in relevant locations, and we’ll discuss the purpose of timelapse, including reasons why we should consider timelapse as a tool for capturing and manipulating time in order to communicate ideas and generate creative expressions. We’ll demonstrate how timelapse captures of various intervals can work in service of various projects, including the Create360 project.
