Less a sequel to the 1984 original than a feverish parody of it, Joe Dante’s madcap satire moves the action from small-town Kingston Falls to the Big Apple, where the mischievous little monsters wreak havoc upon a New York City skyscraper. With gloriously gloopy Rick Baker effects, a gag-a-minute ratio that would leave Mel Brooks’ head spinning, and an onslaught of pop-culture references ranging from Rambo to Ray Harryhausen, GREMLINS 2 is a chance to watch a brilliant filmmaker unleash his movie-addled id all over the screen. It’s not only one of cinema’s greatest sequels, it’s also one of the most uproarious comedies ever made.
