About the event

Gravois Greenway/Grant's Trail Bioblitz
Science isn’t just for people in lab coats. Thanks to citizen science, anyone with any background can contribute essential data and help expand our understanding of the natural world.

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Great Rivers Greenway (GRG), and other community partners invite you to take part in the Gravois Greenway/Grant’s Trail Bioblitz on Saturday, Sept. 20 along the Gravois Greenway and Gravois Creek Conservation Area in south St. Louis County.

This event runs from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m., near the Mysun Trailhead on Hoffmeister Avenue, next to Orlando’s. There will be multiple opportunities to join the bioblitz throughout the day. The event is free and open to people of all ages and experience levels.

During this bioblitz participants will survey the area along the Gravois Greenway and Gravois Creek Conservation Area, recording as many plant, fungi, and animal species as possible within 24 hours.

You can participate by collecting data using the iNaturalist mobile app anytime on your own during the day, or sign up for expert-led sessions based on the schedule below. Whether you’re a seasoned naturalist or just curious about nature, your observations will contribute to valuable conservation research.

The guided sessions throughout the day will include:

Birds: 7-9 a.m.
Insects and pollinators: 9 a.m.-11 a.m.
Herbaceous and fungi: 11 a.m-1 p.m.
Trees and shrubs: 1-3 p.m.
Aquatic animals: 3-5 p.m.
Reptiles and amphibians: 5-7 p.m.
Mammals: 7-9 p.m.
Nighttime insects and pollinators: 7-9 p.m.
Those interested in a guided group session must register for that individual shift in advance at givepul.se/81iv15.

Participants should bring a mobile phone or tablet with the iNaturalist app installed and logged in. The free mobile app can be downloaded for Android or iOS. More information on how to enter data using iNaturalist at http://short.mdc.mo.gov/4vS . Enter all data under the Bioblitz at Gravois Greenway/Gravois Creek Conservation Area project.

Participants should also dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes and long pants.
