Fireflies (aka lightning bugs) are one of nature’s most fascinating creatures. Not only are they remarkable in their ability to produce light, but each species has their own unique light color and flashing pattern. Each summer they fill the sky with nature’s fireworks. It’s hard to imagine a Midwest summer without them!
Avoid the crowds and noise of traditional fireworks and join us at Meadowbrook for a celebration of the amazing firefly. Insect enthusiastic Chris Joll and Programs Coordinator Mari Patis will share insights into the many species, light patterns, and other fun facts about the firefly, in addition to how you can help ensure their future.
As the night dims, fireflies will take stage at the Meadowbrook Amphitheater. RSVP below to save a spot for this truly spectacular performance!
Please check back for more details as the event approaches!
-Please remember no foraging or collecting of species is allowed on Shirley Heinze nature preserves.
-The amphitheater is located within the nature preserve, about a 0.4-mile walk from the parking lot.
-Outdoor restrooms are available near the Meadowbrook parking lot.
Safety Note: It is important to maintain tick prevention during the warmer months of the year, including proper attire and tick repellent. However, please be mindful when using insect repellent around our firefly friends, e.g. spray in the parking lot before entering the preserve. We want all participants—human and insect—to have a fun and safe experience!
