Everyone who knew Conlei knows how much Big Turkey Lake (BTL) meant to her, and how much she loved turtles, so we are combining 2 of her favorite things, the lake and turtles, using them so celebrate her life and fund research to help K*ll the beast that took her from us.
Fun story a very nice person from the BTL actually gave her the nickname “Turtle Whisperer” She used to walk down to the creek at the end of our addition and hunt turtles, she caught a LOT of turtles in her short life. She always had a bunch of kids following her, most several years older. One of their mothers I believe told me how that group of kids gave her the name. She had quite the following and was a little bit of a celebrity. I have always loved that story because it was just so her!!! She could make friends anywhere with anyone.

We will have timing, but its also a fun run, for us oldies who do not run anymore 😉

Where the money is going?
The Cure Starts Now Foundation, founded in Cincinnati and is the largest pediatric cancer charity in the city, has over 51 chapters in three countries and is dedicated to finding the Homerun Cure™ for cancer by focusing on one of the rarest, most aggressive forms of cancer. Believing in more than just awareness, The Cure Starts Now has funded over $34 million in cancer research and support, resulting in over 150 cutting edge research grants in 29 countries since 2007.
Our Mission and the Homerun Cure™:
The Cure Starts Now represents something truly different – a grassroots effort dedicated to, not just fighting one cancer, but the elimination of ALL cancers. We believe as the experts do; that in order to truly cure cancer you have to focus on:
those cancers that are immune to treatment
those cancers that also affect children
and those cancers that are the biggest bullies with the highest death rate
We call this the Homerun Cure™, but the idea isn’t new. As a matter of fact, this Homerun strategy dates back to the early 1900’s when bold advances in cancer research were made, leading to the invention of surgical efforts, radiation and finally chemotherapy. But the advancements stopped, leaving many patients behind without hope of survival. Resources were prioritized for those cancers that affected the most people rather than those we could learn the most from, and the focus shifted from cures to treatments.

We believe as the experts do; that in order to truly cure cancer you have to focus on those cancers that are the biggest bullies like pediatric brain cancer. The Cure Starts Now is the first cancer charity dedicated to this “homerun cure.”
CSN is one of the only cancer foundations dedicated to a “homerun” cure for all cancers, starting first with one of the most deadly and difficult cancers: pediatric brain cancer.
Many experts believe that the lessons we learn from fighting pediatric cancer may in fact provide us the critical first step in winning the battle against all forms of cancer, both pediatric and adult, hence, “The Homerun Cure”.
Significant Advancements:
We’ve helped develop a revolutionary linked, and organic cancer registry in 29 countries that allows us to determine patters, as well as, potentially predict outcomes in DIPG and DMG.
We helped implement research that has led to the identification of key mutations tied to DIPG and DMG that have been also identified in other solid mass tumors. Understanding how these work may lead to new strategies in how we cure all cancers.
We’ve helped to foster new therapeutic advancements in radiology that seek to shorten treatment and energize impact in ways we never thought possible. Some of these efforts have been recognized as top achievements in science.
We’ve helped build a coalition of families, foundations, researchers, and consortiums, where little existed, to rally behind the homerun cure™ strategy.
We’ve helped advance new delivery methods to reach previously “untouchable” cancers like DIPG/DMG, thereby offering us methods to apply existing compounds in search of a cure.
We’ve helped in the development of international hospital consortiums to unify expertise for patients in the fight and to offer continuous options for trials to help them win the fight.
