Learn to care for your horse on the trail, build a partnership with your equine companion, and enjoy the beautiful Los
Penasquitos Canyon Preserve trails! You'll have a chance to earn ribbons, too. We are a friendly, non-profit educational
trail riding organization, and we love newcomers!
If you are new to Competitive Trail Riding, we invite you to come and learn about the sport that we love. Don’t let the
word “competition” keep you away. Our primary goal is to help you learn to be a better trail rider, and keep your horse
sound and healthy on long rides. If you win a ribbon, that’s icing on the cake!
We are having two separate rides this weekend: one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Each ride will start in the morning,
and will be about 10 miles in length. Terrain includes fire roads, single track trails and water crossings. We time the ride
to be around 3.5 mph, which means most horses can complete it at a walk. You may ride on just Saturday, just Sunday, or
both days.
A Competitive Trail Ride is NOT A RACE. It is a timed and measured distance-riding event, much like a car rally. Horses
of all breeds, including mules, are invited. All types of tack is allowed; just make sure your horse has a saddle and bridle.
You will follow marked trails using GPS and a printed map, with specified minimum and maximum riding times. You and
your horse will be observed over the course of the ride by an experienced Leisure Division (LeD) judge, who will serve as
your mentor, and watch the way you handle and care for your horse along the trail as you encounter nature obstacles,
like streams, hills and logs. Barefoot horses are welcome; we recommend hoof boots for those who might be sensitive to
rocks.
