Calling all gardeners, land stewards, and fruit tree owners! Sonoma Ecology Center and Sonoma County Ag + Open Space are excited to offer this hands-on pruning workshop at Sonoma Garden Park, led by orchard manager Cody Curtis. Currently the foreman at Paul's Produce, Cody has farmed and apples and pears in the Sierra Nevada and managed the Felix Gillet Institute's fruit tree nursery. He believes that trees have a lot to teach us and that by tending to fruit trees we build a long, lasting relationship with our ecology.
In this workshop, participants will learn about the fundamental principles, strategies, and techniques of fruit tree pruning, and get a chance to apply what they have learned to the fruit trees at Sonoma Garden Park! Cody's goal for each workshop participant is to use simple tree pruning rules to develop a confident, intuitive approach to pruning. He will be available to discuss consultations and services for attendees who'd like further help pruning their own trees.
Now is the ideal time of year to make sure your fruit trees are well pruned and in tip top shape before their dormant season is over! Come learn new skills, meet new friends, and enjoy an enriching afternoon at the garden park!
There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax. Sonoma Garden Park was protected by Ag + Open Space in November of 2011 for recreation and preservation of its natural resources, and learning classroom environment for agriculture field trips for nearby elementary schools through Sonoma Ecology Center’s “Growing Discovery” program. The 6-acre property, hidden in eastern Sonoma, is an incredible public park and working garden site in Sonoma Valley, home of a wide array of habitats alongside sustainably designed systems for both agriculture use and landscaping purposes.
