Protected by Sonoma County Ag + Open Space in 2002, the Keen Property is one of Sonoma Valley's more unique and picturesque conservation easements. This rugged hillside landscape protects ancient lava flows that form dramatic rocky ridges and outcrops, framing native plant communities and offering sweeping views of Sonoma Valley and the surrounding Mayacamas Mountains. The property is also home to the headwaters of Agua Caliente Creek.
On this very challenging out-and-back hike (approximately 3.5 miles roundtrip with roughly 1,400 feet of elevation gain), we will climb steep, uneven terrain along the flanks of the Mayacams near Mt. Veeder. There is no established trail. Participants should expect difficult footing, scrambling over volcanic rock, and some light bushwhacking.
The Keen property was heavily affected by the October 2017 wildfires, and this outing offers an opportunity to observe post-fire recovery and learn how to interpret fire-affected landscapes. This hike is for advanced, experienced hikers only and is rated VERY challenging (Black Diamond).
Please come prepared with:
—Sturdy hiking shoes suitable for rocky, even terrain
—Long pants
—Plenty of water (at least 64 oz)
—Sun protection and layered clothing
—Lunch or trail snacks
There is no charge for this outing, which is made possible by the voters of Sonoma County who fund the work of Ag + Open Space with a quarter-cent sales tax.
