Audition Notice
ABSURD PERSON SINGULAR
Sunday 30 November 14:00
We are casting a small ensemble of six adult actors for a new comedy that satirises suburban domestic life. Rehearsals will begin in December and performances will be in the beginning of April. Below is a brief character sketch and the casting requirements for each role.
Prepare an excerpt from any comedy play and be prepared to read script pieces at auditions.
SIDNEY HOPCROFT
Early‑thirties, small‑stature, dapper, energetic and exuberant. Starts the play running a general store, later expands into real‑estate development. A cheerful handyman who fidgets, loves DIY projects, and gives practical (if unromantic) gifts—like a deluxe washing machine. He is socially oblivious but well‑meaning, constantly trying to spark fun, even in inappropriate moments.
Requirements: Male, 28‑38, comfortable with physical comedy, able to convey rapid energy and nervous fidgeting, strong comedic timing, basic ability to mimic a dated suit and mustache.
JANE HOPCROFT
Early‑thirties, Sidney’s wife. Obsessive about cleaning, often breaks into song while scrubbing. She appears cheerful but stiff, viewing hosting as a duty rather than pleasure. In the final scene she loosens up after a few drinks, showing a hidden playful side.
Requirements: Female, 28‑38, ability to portray exaggerated domestic obsession with a mix of rigidity and eventual abandon.
RONALD BREWSTER-WRIGHT
Early‑forties, bank officer, well‑bred, reserved, and somewhat stuffy. He is competent at his job but hopeless with repairs (nearly electrocutes himself fixing a light). Married for the second time and admits women are incomprehensible.
Requirements: Male, 40‑50, polished demeanor, capable of dry wit and physical comedy (awkward handyman mishaps), must convey a dignified yet clumsy presence.
MARION BREWSTER-WRIGHT
Mid‑thirties to early‑forties, cosmopolitan, sophisticated, and patronising toward those she deems beneath her. She is two‑faced; charming to the Hopcrofts but scornful behind their backs, and drinks heavily to mask boredom. Her alcoholism becomes a visible problem by the end.
Requirements: Female, 35‑45, strong presence, adept at rapid shifts between charm and contempt, ability to portray subtle intoxication and its escalation, clear diction for witty lines.
GEOFFREY JACKSON
Mid‑thirties, handsome, self‑styled “sexual Flying Dutchman.” An architect with inflated self‑esteem who womanises shamelessly. His career falters when a building he designed collapses, leading to a humbled, more emotionally aware version of himself by the final act.
Requirements: Male, 30‑40, confident, able to convey swagger and later vulnerability, comfortable with brief physical comedy, good chemistry with Eva.
EVA JACKSON
Mid‑thirties, Geoffrey’s wife. Initially distraught, dependent on tranquilizers, and disheveled. After a botched suicide attempt, she finds resolve, becomes tidy, and displays remarkable good sense and emotional stability by the end.
Requirements: Female, 30‑40, ability to portray deep despair transitioning to resilient strength, comfortable with brief moments of physical frailty and later confidence, clear emotional range.
