Intended for Teens (upcoming 6th-12th graders), registration & waiver required. Adults welcome!
In Samurai Sword Class (1:00 - 2:00 PM), Samurai Dan will demonstrate how samurai practiced swordsmanship. He will teach us kenjutsu moves and kenjutsu kata (prearranged sequences of moves). We will follow along using our bokken.
Don't forget to sign up for Ninja Sword Class at 2:30 PM too! We'll enjoy a snack between classes.
Please note:
This is a swordsmanship program, not a sword fighting program.
There will be no sparring or two-partner drills. Samurai Dan will teach us moves and we will follow along.
The points of this program are exercise, education, and building focus.
All participants must register and sign a waiver. See attached PDF.
Participants younger than 18-years-old must have their parent or guardian sign their waiver.
Event will be hosted at the Solon United Methodist Church Family Life Center in the gymnasium.
Address: 131 N. West Street, Solon, Iowa.
More about this program:
Dan Coglan a.k.a Samurai Dan is professional performer and a black belt in kenjutsu. Kenjutsu is the Japanese art of using a sword. Samurai Dan has taught Japanese swordsmanship classes for decades. Now, he'll teach two free classes here in Solon. We won't be using actual swords, of course. Instead, Samurai Dan will bring bokken - pieces of wood carved to resemble Japanese sword - for us to use. There will be no sharp edges in this program.
