ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
How can we transform the words, images, and conversations we encounter every day into poetry? In this documentary poetry workshop, we will learn how to combine primary source materials (e.g. letters, news articles, speeches) with poetry, and see how this hybrid voice can yield unexpected results. Participants will learn more about the technical and aesthetic choices that documentary poets take to reflect the poetic quality of everyday life in their poems. We will also reflect on how documentary poetry can be a powerful tool to change the stories and narratives that define our identities.
All participants will be able to bring their poems home. All writing materials will be provided, including primary source material such as newspapers, magazines, and speeches. However, participants are encouraged to bring their own source material to the workshop! It is recommended to bring materials such as newspaper or magazine articles, letters, or even digital materials like TikTok/YouTube videos and social media posts - something that resonated with you, is relevant to your life, and makes you want to write poetry.
