History of the Grange

This presentation will be about how the Grange movement started here in Oregon and elsewhere as a rural analog to the late 19th Century labor movement. Once a force in progressive policies, the Grange has since become more of a rural social and community service club, with an until recently, annually decreasing membership. The last several years however has seen the birth of the "Green Grange" movement, a loose-knit group of Granges that have decided to return to a re-localization community-based life style. As our society transitions from one predicated on eternal growth to a more sustainable paradigm, this presentation shows how this agriculturally rooted group can play an active role.

Gus Frederick is a native Oregonian, born in 1954, 100 years after his hometown of Silverton was founded. He is by training a filmmaker and photographer, although he has broadened that term by necessity to multimedia artist. He recently retired from the Oregon State Fire Marshal's Fire & Life Safety Education Division.
