The Guild of Creative Art presents “Abstract Conversations”
August 23 – September 16, 2025
Meet the Artists Reception
Sunday, September 7, 3:00 – 5:00pm
It is the responsibility of the artist to make the unseen seen.
Abstract Conversations is a collection of contemporary two and three dimensional artworks that invites the viewer on a visual journey that explores the power of abstract expression using colors and dynamic shapes to evoke emotion that leaves room for personal interpretation.
In this wide-ranging exhibit of paintings and sculptures, viewers will encounter subjects springing from the imaginations of each artist that are meant to take hold of the viewer’s own imagination.
There may be a face or a striding figure, but it is not a formal portrait. Other works will bring to mind landscapes anchored by a horizon, perhaps seen at ground level or from an aerial perspective. Still other works may feel “botanical” with passages that resemble flowers or leaves.
But throughout, each artist did not set out to recreate nature, to create a portrait or a recognizable object such as a tree or a building. The works in this exhibit are products of the imagination. They are art of pure creativity – non-objective and non-representational.
Where do the conversations come in? The first conversation occurs with the viewer, who perhaps sees objects that are evocative of other more recognizable or identifiable objects seen in the real world.
The next level of conversation is between and among the works themselves. These works communicate with each other. The sculptures on exhibit pull complementary passages out of the canvases on the walls. The hanging works call to their neighbors next to them or across the room, finding commonality in colors or shapes. Part of the experience is discovering these connections for oneself.
The participating artists are current or alumni members of the Monday evening Lyrical Abstract Expressionism class led by James Kent which begins its twenty-first season this fall: Nancy Conley, Dawn DiCicco, Shari Epstein, Douglas Gilbert, Mitra Gilbert, Nancy Karpf, James Kent, Annette Margulies, Derek Riddle, Leona Tenebruso-Shultes, and Karen Starrett. The exhibit is curated by James Kent.
