eitoeiko is honored to present "Women of the Battlefield," our first solo exhibition by Chen Ching-Yao. Born in Taiwan in 1976, Chen Ching-Yao creates works that skillfully blend humor and irony to examine contemporary issues, cultural trends, and societal systems. In this exhibition, the artist references the work of Chen Chin (1907–1998), a pioneering female painter born during Taiwan’s Japanese colonial era, to reflect on the current socio-political conditions of Japan, China, and Taiwan. In Chen Chin's View(1945), a woman is depicted gazing upwards from the entrance of an underground air raid shelter. Through Chen Ching-Yao’s reinterpretation of this work, viewers are presented with a critical lens on today’s society. In addition to three video works and painting that reference Chen Chin’s pieces, the exhibition will also present new works developed from the paintings of two other Taiwanese artists, transformed through visual translation. Chen Ching-Yao revisits recent art history, reminding us that the safety and stability of our current daily lives are inseparable from political and diplomatic contexts.
During the same period, a solo exhibition titled "84th anniversary of the outbreak of the World War II: War and Art" will be held at the Tagawa City Art Museum, from July 12 to August 31. We cordially invite you to view both of the two solo exhibitions.
