Redefining the Past of Feminist Art in Japan (フェミニズムアートの過去を再定義する)

This panel event will feature Michiko Kasahara, Director of the Nagano Prefectural Art Museum, alongside artists from the exhibition, to discuss how feminist art redefines history in Japan. What is the social and historical significance of Japanese feminist artworks that reveal structural oppression—a central theme in this exhibition? How has feminist curation, in response to social change, reshaped art history? The talk will also trace the evolution of feminist exhibitions from the 1990s—many of which Kasahara pioneered—to the present day, highlighting the historical significance of curating from a feminist perspective.

トークイベント「フェミニズムアートの過去を再定義する」では、長野県立美術館館長の笠原美智子氏をゲストに迎え、本展出展作家とともに、フェミニズムアートがいかに歴史（過去）を再定義するかについてディスカッションを行います。本展出展作品に共通する社会的抑圧を描き出すフェミニズムアート作品の社会的、歴史的意義とは何か？また、社会変化に応答するフェミニズム・キュレーションとはどういったものなのか？日本におけるフェミニズム・キュレーションのパイオニアの一人である笠原氏の視点を通して90年代のジェンダーアートの勃興から現代までの変遷を辿りながら、その歴史的重要性を議論していきます。

Bios:

Michiko Kasahara (笠原美智子)

Director of Nagano Prefectural Art Museum since 2024. Former Vice Director of Artizon Museum (2018–2024) and Chief Curator at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (2006–2018). Previously served as Curator at Tokyo Photographic Art Museum (1989-2002) and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (2002-2006). Born in Nagano, Japan, with a B.A. in Sociology (Meiji Gakuin University) and an M.A. in Photography (Columbia College, Chicago). Selected curatorial works include I Know Something About Love (2018) and Love’s Body – Art in the Age of AIDS (2010). Author of Essays on Photography from a Gender Perspective, expanded version (2021) and The Politics Behind the Nude (1998).

長野県立美術館館長 (2024- )、石橋財団アーティゾン美術館副館長 (2018-2024 旧ブリヂストン美術館)、 東京都写真美術館事業企画課長(2006 –2018)、 東京都現代美術館学芸員(2002 – 2006) 東京都写真美術館学芸員 (1989 – 2006)。長野県生まれ。明治学院大学社会学部社会学科卒業。シカゴ・コロンビア・カレッジ修士課程修了（写真専攻）。主な著作に『ジェンダー写真論 1991 -2017』(里山社、2021)、『ヌードのポリティクス　女性写真家の仕事』（1998、筑摩書房）｡主な展覧会として、「愛について アジアン･コンテンポラリー」展(2018)、「ラヴズ・ボディ　生と性を巡る表現」展(2010)、他。

Yoshiko Shimada (嶋田美子)

Born in Tokyo, Japan. She graduated from Scripps College in 1982, and received Ph.D from Kingston University, London in 2015. She explores the themes of cultural memory and the role of women in the Asia-Pacific War, as both aggressors and victims. She uses printmaking, video, performance, research and archiving for her expression.

東京都生まれ。1982年にスクリプス大学を卒業し、2015年に英国キングストン大学で博

士号を取得。嶋田は、文化的記憶やアジア太平洋戦争における女性の役割を加害、被害両方の視点をテーマに作品を制作している。版画、映像、パフォーマンス、リサーチやアーカイブの幅広い表現通してテーマの探求を行う。

Layla Yamamoto (山本れいら)

Born in Tokyo, Japan. Yamamoto explores Japan's sociopolitical landscape, reflecting feminist and postcolonial perspectives. Her works critically examine Japan's nuclear power history and systemic sexual violence in the postwar period, and offer reinterpretations of anime and manga culture through feminist and queer lenses.

東京都生まれ。日本の社会政治的状況を探求し、フェミニズムおよびポストコロニアリズムの視点を反映させた作品を制作している。彼女の作品は、日本の原子力史や戦後の制度的性暴力を批判的に考察し、またアニメやマンガ文化をフェミニズムおよびクィアの視点から再解釈する試みを行っている。

Namae Myoji (みょうじなまえ)

Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Myoji earned a B.F.A. in Oil Painting from Tokyo University of the Arts (2019) and has been pursuing a Master’s there since 2022. Drawing from personal experiences especially her childhood memories, Myoji creates installations exploring the female body, gender, and identity, questioning how society shapes these constructs. Her work examines how culture and community influence self-definition and the distortions caused by gender　identity frameworks.

兵庫県生まれ、2019年に東京藝術大学美術学部絵画科油画専攻を卒業、2019年、東京藝

術大学大学院美術研究科絵画専攻油画に入学。幼少期の記憶をはじめとする自身の経験をもとに、女性の身体、ジェンダー、アイデンティティを探求するインスタレーション作品を制作。文化やコミュニティが自己の定義に与える影響、そしてジェンダー・アイデンティティの枠組みが引き起こす歪みに着目し、社会がこれらのアイデンティティをめぐる概念をどのように形成するのかを表現を通じて問いかける。
