🌸 How Do We Define Beauty?

What is beauty? And why to do many of us feel the pressure to achieve it? Is it something objective that can be defined through mathematics, symmetry, universal patterns, or is it purely in the eye of the beholder and their cultural biases?

How does culture shape our perception of beauty, or is there something timeless about it?

This week at IQ Cafe, we’ll explore how science, philosophy, art, and different cultures have tried to define beauty, and what it means for our lives today.

Everyone is welcome!

☕ What to expect:

• A short introduction to the topic
• Bilingual discussion in small groups with diverse viewpoints
• In a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where any view is welcome

🕒 Schedule:

8:00-8:20 - Listen to a bilingual lecture on the night's topic while enjoying snacks and coffee

8:20-9:00 - Discussion in small groups

Afterwards - Stick around and hang out with new friends!

What is IQ Cafe?

IQ Cafe is a place that wants to create a space for you to think deeply.We think it's a shame how many people go through life without reflecting on things that matter. It’s important to take the time to think about the difficult questions in life. It can be easy to live your life and just go through the motions.

The presentations at IQ Cafe are always bilingual because we want you to be able to practice Japanese and English! For the discussion time, there are tables with English and Japanese available. Let's practice language together!

美しさとは何でしょうか？ そして、なぜ多くの人が「美しくならなければならない」というプレッシャーを感じるのでしょうか？

数学や対称性、普遍的なパターンによって客観的に定義できるものなのか？それとも見る人の感覚や文化的な価値観によって決まる主観的なものなのでしょうか？

文化は私たちの「美」の感覚をどう形づくるのでしょうか？それとも「美」には時代を超えて存在する普遍的な何かがあるのでしょうか？

今週のIQカフェでは、科学・哲学・芸術、そしてさまざまな文化が「美」をどう定義してきたのかを一緒に探り、それが現代の私たちにとってどんな意味を持つのかを考えていきます。
