💔 Why Do Bad Things Happen?

Suffering is one of the hardest parts of being human.Natural disasters, injustice, illness, loss...

Bad things happen every day often without warning, and without clear reason. But why?

Many people around the world believe in a good and all-powerful God. But if such a God exists, why is there so much pain and injustice in the world?

This week at IQ Cafe, we’ll explore one of the oldest and deepest philosophical and spiritual questions: the Problem of Evil.

We’ll look at a few major theodicies, ways people of faith have tried to answer this challenge, and explore how different worldviews, both religious and non-religious, respond to suffering.

Whether you're religious, spiritual, skeptical, or simply curious, we all have to come to understand as to why evil exists. And we'd love you to to come, listen, share, and think deeply with others.

🕒 Schedule:

8:00-8:20 - Listen to a bilingual lecture on the night's topic while enjoying snacks and coffee

8:20-9:00 - Discussion in small groups

Afterwards - Stick around and hang out with new friends!

The presentations at IQ Cafe are always bilingual because we want you to be able to practice Japanese and English! For the discussion time, there are tables with English and Japanese available. Let's practice language together!

💔 なぜ悪いことは起こるのか？

苦しみは、人間にとって最もつらい現実のひとつです。自然災害、不正、病気、喪失…。

悪いことは毎日のように、突然、そして理由もわからないまま起こります。でも、なぜでしょうか？

世界には「善で全能な神」を信じている人が多くいます。もし本当にそのような神がいるのなら、なぜこの世界にはこれほどまでに苦しみや不正があるのでしょうか？

今週のIQ Cafeでは、哲学的にも霊的にも最も古く、そして深い問いのひとつである「悪の問題」に向き合います。

信仰を持つ人々がどのようにこの問いに答えようとしてきたのか、いくつかの代表的な神義論（theodicy）を紹介しながら、宗教的な立場と非宗教的な立場の両方から「苦しみ」にどう向き合うかを考えていきます。

信仰がある人も、スピリチュアルな人も、懐疑的な人も、ただ興味があるだけでも構いません。

私たちは皆、「なぜ悪が存在するのか」という問いと向き合わなければなりません。

ぜひ一緒に考え、聞き、語り合いましょう。英語でも日本語でも参加OK！
