About the event

2025 Training Symposium
A two-day fire department training symposium in support of the Strathcona County Firefighters Honour Guard.

Welcome to the 2025 Training Symposium hosted by the Strathcona County Firefighters Honour Guard. Join us for two days of fire department-specific training from two internationally known fire service veterans.
A ticket purchase includes entry to both days of the symposium, a welcome social on the evening of the 11th hosted by 70 Acre Brewing Company, and an invite to march in the annual Strathcona County Fallen Firefighters Memorial March on September 13th. So bring your Class A!
Sorry, no single-day tickets are available.

September 11 (day one) will boast multiple in-depth tactical, fire dynamics, and leadership lectures from Captain Sean Gray, Cobb County Fire Department.
Sean has been a member of multiple technical panels involving fire safety research and is an appointed member of the UL FSRI Advisory Board. He has co-authored the book The Evolving Fireground (Fire Engineering) and speaks nationally on research-based tactics. Additionally, Sean is an NFPA committee member for Fundamentals of Fire Control Within a Structure Utilizing Fire Dynamics (NFPA 1700), Fire Hose (NFPA 1961-1965), and Fire Service Training Facilities (NFPA 1400).

September 12 (day two) will be highlighted by Captain (ret.) Tim Dietz and a first-hand account of behavioural health issues faced by firefighters.
Tim retired after 30 years in the fire service and is the Founder/CEO of Behavioral Wellness Resources, a consulting/counselling firm catering to emergency response organizations' and individuals' behavioural wellness needs. He is an internationally known speaker on human emotional crisis, grief, and staying mentally healthy in the emergency service professions. He is the author of the book “Scenes of Compassion.” A Responder’s Guide for Dealing with Emergency Scene Emotional Crisis and Managing a Fire Company w/ John Brunacini . He has also written several published articles addressing behavioural health issues in the fire service. Tim is the Clinical Director for the Oregon Satellite of the West Coast Post-Trauma Retreat, a residential treatment facility for first responders suffering from PTSD, and he was the clinical advisor to the U.S. Coast Guard’s mental health response following hurricanes Katrina and Rita and to the stress management team at the Oso, Washington mudslide. In 2017, Tim received the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation’s “Pioneering Spirit” Award as an “Industry Pioneer” for his programs on emergency scene crisis control and compassion. Creating the Culture for Behavioral Health in the Fire Service is a course on behavioural health in the fire service taught by a person who spent 30 years working in the fire service and is now a clinician treating stress (mental health) injuries in first responders. This training focuses on enhancing resiliency – or how quickly we rebound from stress – in people whose occupation requires continual exposure to stressful situations.

This in-person event is your chance to enhance your skills, further your career, and support the Strathcona County Firefighters Honour Guard, who honour fallen fire, police, and EMS personnel across North America.
