The Burning: Sheridan's Operations in the Shenandoah Valley, an author talk with Eric Campbell

For thirteen days in late September and early October 1864, 161 years ago, Major General Philip Sheridan undertook a systematic campaign to destroy the agricultural resources of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, thereby accelerating the Federal military strategy. The Civil War Center is excited to welcome Eric A. Campbell for a lecture entitled, “The Burning: Sheridan’s Operations in the Shenandoah Valley.” Campbell retired from the National Park Service after a thirty-five year career. He worked as the former Chief of Interpretation at Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park and also as a park ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park. In addition, Eric has authored over two dozen articles and essays for scholarly publications and his book, "A Grand Terrible Drama”: From Gettysburg to Petersburg, The Civil War Letters of Charles Wellington Reed, was published by Fordham University Press in 2000.

This program is on Wednesday, October 1, 2025. It begins at 7pm and will be held in the Byrd Auditorium on Shepherd’s campus. The program is free of charge.
