In September 2023, hidden deep within an unassuming office building in Shanghai, a mysterious collective named after the word “cut” quietly came into existence. No one could have predicted that this intimate space—barely fitting 20 people—would soon become the ignition point for a sonic performance revolution sweeping across China.
That collective is better known as trigger.
While “noise” may be the most immediate label for trigger, it’s far from the whole story. What defines them more deeply is an uncompromising respect for all forms of expression. Within trigger’s walls, radical freedom and unapologetic experimentation have drawn the attention of avant-garde artists and sound enthusiasts from across the world. For many, the most extreme performance formats they can imagine still pale in comparison to what’s already happened in this space.
trigger has also cultivated one of the most attentive and disciplined audiences in China. Entry without prior reservation is not allowed; no re-entry during performances. Because everyone agrees on one thing: every second on stage deserves to be fully seen and heard.
It’s this shared belief in liveness, unrepeatability, and irreproducibility that brings DAWless Teahouse and trigger together—resulting in the birth of the 狂躁天团 (Kōsōtiantuán / The Frenzied Collective). For its debut showcase in China, we’re proud to present a special guest from Japan: sound artist and cyber angel FairyMarichel (妖精マリチェル) from Iwate.
Our first encounter with Marichel happened earlier this year in Busan, Korea, where she stunned the audience during a special performance at the Modular Festival. Amidst a landscape of often formulaic hardware sets, her presence—clad in cybernetic wings—was electrifying. She uses every part of her body, every sense, and every technological possibility, both analog and digital, to create a deeply humanist form of sonic art. Active since 2005, her work is a rare example of embodied electronic performance that’s as visceral as it is visionary.
As the final stop of the ‘Frenzied Collective’ southern tour, FairyMarichel will present two sets: a 30-minute sensory performance and a specially prepared 1-hour live dance set. Expect the unexpected.
