Fiery free jazz, sparse, minimal improv, deep grooves and big riffs, and a special gig.
We’re delighted to present Sloth Racket on their 10th Anniversary Tour, and with their sixth studio album ‘Arboreal’ set for release in December, they’re a band and group of musicians who have a long-standing relationship with Jazz at The Lescar, and a strong connection with Sheffield. Sloth Racket formed in 2015 and have played across the UK including appearances at London and Lancaster Jazz Festivals.
Sloth Racket are led by baritone saxophonist Cath Roberts (Quadraceratops, Favourite Animals), with Anton Hunter (Beats & Pieces Big Band, Article XI) on guitar, Sam Andreae (Trio Riot) on alto sax, Seth Bennett (Metamorphic) on double bass, Johnny Hunter (Ingrid Laubrock, Laura Cole) on drums.

‘Watching Sloth Racket perform is a thrilling experience, conveying a palpable sense that the musicians are navigating the scores by the seat of their pants, making real-time group decisions that sculpt the compositions into unique shapes each time they’re played.’ – Daniel Spicer, The Wire, December 2021
'Sloth Racket produce sumptuous, mischievous music' The Quietus
Leader of Sloth Racket, improviser, composer and artist Cath Roberts works across both acoustic and electronic music, experimental composition, graphic scores, and DIY publishing. A powerful and creative improviser Cath has worked with US drummer Chris Corsano, and currently has a number of fascinating projects ongoing including a collaboration with Kate Carr called Quartz Sand, and a collaboration with Tullis Rennie.
On guitar Anton Hunter is perhaps best known for his part in the acclaimed Beats & Pieces Big Band, as well as Sloth Racket. His expanded Article XI line-up (in a double bill with Cath Roberts’ Favourite Animals) was one of our most incredible gigs, and he joined us most recently for a delightful gig playing alongside bassist John Pope and violinist John Garner. A quietly creative presence on the Northern and UK jazz and improvised music scenes.
As well as Sloth Racket, Sam Andreae also visited us with Trio Riot (featuring Mette Rasmussen) a few years back, a playful spontaneous yet thoughtful musician who’s saxophone playing seeks the outer limits of his instrument. He’s worked across Europe with a range of improvising musicians including David Birchall, Toshimaru Makamura, Maggie Nichols, Steve Noble, and Corey Mwamba.
Seth Bennett is one of the UK’s pre-eminent improvising double bass players, and an energising force in any line-up. Originally from Sheffield, but currently based in rural Perthshire, he performs across Britain and Europe, including with Sloth Racket, the Julie Tippets/Martin Archer Ensemble, Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp, and the large ensemble Favourite Animals.
An energising and creative force, Johnny Hunter’s reputation continues to grow, working with musicians including Ingrid Laubrock, Liam Noble, Gerry Hemingway, Laura Cole, Alicia Gardener-Trejo and John Pope. As both a drummer and a composer, he’s an inspiring presence who’s music always pushes forward and develops in original and unexpected ways.
