Statement from Sheffield Grand Mosque
27/08/2025
Assalamu Alaikum,
On behalf of Sheffield Grand Mosque, we would like to address the incident that took place on Monday evening during the lecture delivered by Mufti Menk.
As a masjid, we value respectful conversation, constructive dialogue, and critical reflection.
During the event, a brother stood up and began addressing Mufti Menk. At first, we assumed it was a question, but he continued speaking at length, refused repeated requests to sit down, and declined to leave the premises when asked. Given the unpredictability of his behaviour, we were left with no choice but to escort him out of the prayer hall.
Outside the masjid, the brother continued to argue and refused to disperse despite repeated efforts to calm the situation. With more than 2,500 worshippers and guests present, and in the interest of ensuring the safety and peace of all attendees, the police were contacted to help de-escalate matters.
We wish to clarify that this individual has caused disruptions at the mosque on previous occasions. He has been advised that any concerns should be raised in the proper manner and at the appropriate time.
Sheffield Grand Mosque remains a welcoming place for all. We encourage open dialogue and feedback, but this must always be conducted with respect, courtesy, and in a manner that does not disturb others.
We are committed to maintaining a safe, peaceful, and inclusive environment for worship and learning, and we thank the community for their continued support and understanding.
