Cemetery Sessions Present RESONANT BODIES X SULLOW & SUPPORT FROM LOU BARNELL
RESONANT BODIES X SULLOW
Resonant Bodies is a duo consisting of Rob Bentall (nyckelharpa) and Zebedee Budworth (hammered dulcimer). They met playing in doom-folk ensemble Slug Milk sometime in 2017. The duo seeks to reimagine their medieval sound world through improvised musical dialogue. Their improvisations can feel like a white-knuckle ride; ranging from calm to chaotic, they work up to a frantic pace, pushing themselves to a point they can barely hold. Their performances have a distinct flavour due to the simple, tonal harmonies that their ancient instruments can produce. Recently, Resonant Bodies have supported Shovel Dance Collective at EartH, were part of Sonorities Festival (Belfast), and were selected for a prestigious Britten Pears Artist Residency in 2026.
Sullow are an improvising trio, featuring Jacken Elswyth, Daniel S. Evans, and Joshua Barfoot of Shovel Dance Collective. Inflected and informed by the traditional music they mutate within the larger group, they negotiate an improvisation that has been variably described as ‘farmyard’ and ‘rodeo’. Repeated patterns rise and fall in quick attacks, short decays and dense bursts of momentary composition.
For this concert, the Resonant Bodies and Sullow will join forces to form an improvising quintet, blending the styles of the two groups. This quintet had its debut performance at The Horse Hospital, London in April 2025.

LOU BARNELL
I am an award-winning vocalist, sound and performance artist, one of Sound and Music's New Voices 2022
Composers, and one of Manchester Jazz Festival's Residents 2024.
I was winner of the 2021 Oram Awards, supported by The PRS Foundation and BBC Radiophonic Institute in recognition of innovation in sound and technology.
As a neurodivergent woman, I make immersive musical performance to communicate my synaesthetic experiences within a ‘Live Dream.’
This morphic space translates as a squishy, visceral approach to music performance where constellations of materials, cyborg technology, voice and movement help me make sense of my world. Shapeshifting materials such as ice, wax and thermoplastic melt and reform, alongside brutal, beautiful soundscapes and infectious, exhilarating beats.
