Acoustic instrumental music has rarely been as beautifully represented as by Alison Brown. A multi‑faceted force in today’s roots scene, her work is defined by innovation, intelligence, and grace. As a banjo player, she rewrites the rulebook, blending the rugged drive of bluegrass with the harmonic depth of jazz—a sound that has earned her wide acclaim and a GRAMMY.
Alison followed an unconventional path to international recognition. After graduating from Harvard and earning an MBA from UCLA, she began a career in investment banking, but the bluegrass of her Southern California upbringing kept calling. When Alison Krauss sought a banjo player, Brown left Wall Street, touring with Krauss, Union Station, and Michelle Shocked before forming The Alison Brown Quartet in 1993.
Since then, she and her band have won over both traditionalists and mainstream audiences, touring extensively across the US and abroad, including trips to Central and South America for the US Information Agency and to Japan as Friendship Ambassadors.
Brown recently collaborated with Steve Martin on the banjo‑driven album Safe, Sensible and Sane, featuring guest artists such as Jackson Browne, Vince Gill, Indigo Girls, and Jason Mraz. She has released 12 acclaimed solo albums, earned a GRAMMY and multiple nominations, and received honors including the USA Artists Fellowship in Music and the IBMA Distinguished Achievement Award. Her work has been featured on CBS Sunday Morning, NPR’s All Things Considered, and in major national publications.
Alison is also co‑founder of Compass Records Group, praised by Billboard as “one of the greatest independent labels of the last decade,” overseeing nearly 1,000 releases. She serves on the Nashville Chapter Board of the Recording Academy, teaches at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music, and co‑chairs the Steve Martin Banjo Prize.
