Steeped in tradition, Commemoration Day is the most important day of celebration in the Read School calendar. It is our Founder's Day, commemorating the foundation of the School by Charles Reade in 1667 and celebrates the end of another successful school year.
This year sees a revised format, whereby Read School will enjoy the enormous privilege of hosting our Commemoration Day Service in the magnificent Selby Abbey which plays an increasingly important role in the life of the School.
We are delighted to welcome Draxonian Mr Robin Threapleton as our guest speaker.
As is customary for Commemoration Day, the dress code will be formal attire for guests, and clean, pressed uniform for pupils, with shoes polished.
There will be a PFA celebration in school following the formal ceremony.
The format for the day will be as follows:
9:30 am
Bus pick up for all pupils normally travelling to school by school bus.
All pupils to arrive in school to be registered in forms, except Lower Junior School and Sixth Form pupils who will travel directly to Selby Abbey.
Transportation of all pupils (Year 3 - Year 11) to Selby Abbey by school bus and coach.
11:00 am
Service of Commemoration at Selby Abbey. The Rev Cannon John Weetman and Rev Mark Poskitt will lead the service.
The Acting Chair of Governors presents his report to parents and the Head will give you a resumé of the school year.
Prizes will be presented by the Guest speaker, Mr Robin Threapleton (Read School Drax, 1985-1993). Pupils will only be permitted to depart directly from the Abbey when specific authorisation has been requested by parents (see attached form).
2:00 pm
Drinks reception at Read School (outside in the courtyard, weather permitting)
PFA family event with BBQ, refreshments and music by Martyn Barker Tea Band.
An early booking of tickets will be essential (via ParentMail) and admittance to the event will be strictly by ticket only. Tickets cost £10 for each adult and £5 for non-Read children. The ticket cost includes entrance to the Commemoration Day Ceremony, a commemorative programme and refreshments back in school.
Information regarding parking and the sale of our traditional yellow roses will be released shortly.
