About the event

Visions & Legacies
Gallery of Modern Masters Presents
“ Visions & Legacies ”
671 State Highway 179, @Hillside Suite A 3–4 | Sedona, AZ

Opening Reception: First Friday, September 5, 2025 | 3:00–7:00 PM

This September, the Gallery of Modern Masters invites you to step into a world where history, artistry, and local legacy converge. Visions & Legacies continues our celebration of the visionaries whose creativity forever reshaped the way we see the world—this time bringing new treasures to light for First Friday.

The show features extraordinary works by Surrealist Masters Max Ernst and Dorothea Tanning, both of whom made Sedona their creative sanctuary. Their years in the red rocks deeply influenced their art, leaving behind a legacy woven into the cultural fabric of the region.

Also on display is an exquisite and emotionally stirring Leonor Fini portrait—Portrait de Jeune Fille (Justine)—a work that seems to speak directly to the soul. While Fini never lived in Sedona, she made history as one of the few women to achieve international acclaim in the male-dominated Surrealist movement. In 1943, she was included in Peggy Guggenheim’s groundbreaking Exhibition by 31 Women, which championed female artists at a time when opportunities for them were rare.

The inclusion of both Dorothea Tanning and Leonor Fini in this exhibition is significant—female Modern Masters were scarce, and their works carry a unique resonance. Each woman carved her own path, defying convention and producing art of unflinching individuality and vision.

These pieces are not only masterworks of Surrealism, but also hold significant historical importance to Sedona’s cultural story and to the larger narrative of modern art. They offer a rare opportunity to connect with works that shaped art history and are seldom seen outside major museums.

Joining us for this special event is Mark Rownd—local musician, composer, artist, and passionate art historian, as well as the owner of Capricorn Hill, the historic home once shared by Ernst and Tanning. His deep knowledge of Surrealism and the Sedona art scene will offer guests unique insights into the works and their creators.

The Visions & Legacies exhibition will remain on view at the Gallery of Modern Masters throughout September. This is a rare chance to experience the artistry and legacy of Surrealist legends—both celebrated and often overlooked—right here in Sedona.
