About the event

Laying Hens 101
Curious about raising your own chickens?! Join us for a hands-on workshop covering everything you need to know to start your own flock.

About this Event

There's nothing like farm fresh eggs! Having your own flock of laying hens is so rewarding, but it can be a steep learning curve. Building coops, hen health, predators, productivity, feed and diseases are all topics new chicken owners will face at important (and sometimes unexpected!) times. This workshop will walk through the basics of having layers with experienced small scale farmers, leaving you confident and ready to welcome hens into your own backyard.

Together we will explore:

  • The basics of daily chicken care
  • Coop design, enclosures + fencing
  • Feeding & egg collection
  • Personal experiences and lessons learned from raising a growing flock

Workshop spots are limited, register to reserve your spot!

About Heart & Sol Coastal Farm:

Heart & Sol Coastal Farm is a small scale family farm run by Julie and Socrates Carillo. Using regenerative agriculture and permaculture principles, they grow a wide variety of produce during the growing season. The farm is home to close to 100 free range chickens and a small flock of ducks who lay the most beautiful eggs. They also sell microgreens, many artisinal products made from farm-fresh ingredients, and specialize in authentic Mexican salsas. Along with chickens and ducks, they also raise a small flock of sheep. Their mission, through growing and making food, kids camps and workshops is to create a firsthand connection between the food on our plates and the land where it grows.
