Dive into "Hugh Hayden: American Vernacular" with writing, design, and collaborative risograph printing through a *two-part* zine workshop, co-created with Frye Parlor artist Jayme Yen and Seattle print studio Paper Press Punch.
Session 1: September 20, 11 am–3 pm at the Frye Art Museum
Working in a small group, engage in Jayme Yen’s Mad Libs-inspired activity, Reading the Room, to guide close looking and reflection on the layered themes in Hugh Hayden’s work. Then translate your written reflections into visual compositions using a vibrant array of materials—turning text back into imagery in a collaborative game of artistic telephone.
Session 2: September 27, 11 am–3 pm at Paper Press Punch
Create an original two-color zine featuring your writing and imagery from the first session using Paper Press Punch’s risograph printers. With guidance from printmaker Jessica Hoffman, learn the basics of risograph printing, zine layout, and binding as you bring your group’s ideas to life in print.
Both sessions will include a thirty-minute lunch break. Food will not be provided; please plan to bring your own lunch.
Reflections in the Making is a new Frye Studio series that invites you to explore personal connections with art. Create a piece inspired by the work on view, through a combination of close looking and hands-on art making led by a visiting artist. Using high-quality, sensory-rich materials, you’ll examine how themes in the current exhibitions relate to urgent issues of contemporary life.
