Joy Street Quintet
This ensemble came together in 1999 with a singular goal: to play postmodern renditions of dance-hall classics for anyone passionate about partner dancing. Joy Street’s focus on dance music (as opposed to “listening” music) has made them popular across the region; everything they play was composed with an ear for what dancers need. Expect waltzes of all tempos, virtuosic swing tunes, blues, cha-chas, foxtrots, polkas, one steps and even authentic Argentine tangos. And Lucia Neare regularly brings her own brand of Joy to these performances.
Waltz takes its name from the German word “walzen,” meaning to roll, turn, or glide. It is a ballroom dance done in 3/4 time. Colorful flowing ball gowns (or short skirts), tails (or blue jeans), beautiful Strauss music (or Lyle Lovett). Whatever is your fancy – come give it a whirl!
CAUTION: The Waltz was criticized on moral grounds by those opposed to its close hold and rapid turning movements.
