Sower - Scranton Fringe Festival at The Greenhouse Project in Nay Aug Park
"i intend to make a forest not a song and i confuse the two and this is the most colorful sound.” Part sonic experience, part eco-fiction Sower takes us through the mind-garden of a girl healing from trauma as she learns by observing our non-human kin. We grieve what we cannot quite name; our landscapes and selves have disappeared, so slowly we forgot to notice. While struggling with her own loss of control and power, she finds strength within the wildness of gardens, power of rivers, and resilience of landscapes, forces we’ve forgotten play out not only at large scales, but within ourselves. To remember, all it takes is a seed — and the potential held within. Interdisciplinary artist and musician Willow Gatewood weaves an immersive performance of story, science, and technology. Music for this performance is created in collaboration with plants through a process called biosonification, which allows processes within organisms to “play” digital instruments. After the performance, audiences are invited to explore the greenhouse further with bio-music-making. Notes on Biosonification Biosonification involves turning biological processes within organisms into music or sound. Electrodes and a midi-data biosonification device convert changes in micro-conductivity in plants and fungi to midi notes, which "play" digital instruments. Willow's interest in biosonification lies both in producing rich sonic landscapes that intrigue and connect viewers to the world around them and as a novel method for researching processes that influence micro-conductivity, including ion transport, water transport, and electrical activity in the body of the organism. Content warning: allusion to physical and mental trauma, eco-anxiety, and grief."
